Reception

2nd May 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week in Reception, we’ve continued to build on key areas of learning across the curriculum. Here's a snapshot of what we’ve been exploring in class:

Religious Education

In RE this week, we spent time thinking about the Easter Story; discussing in detail the events and focusing specifically on relevant vocabulary like “Resurrection”.

The children were then tasked with sequencing the story and writing short sentences about each of the events leader up to the resurrection.

Home Learning Task

Ask your child to retell the Easter Story in their own words. Can they explain how the people in the story felt and why?

Phonics

This week we focused on reviewing and securing all Phase 3 graphemes and any Phase 2 digraphs that needed consolidation. The children practised oral blending, tricky words, new vocabulary, and spelling through both teacher-led and independent sessions.

GPC Focus:
CVCC and CCVC word structures (e.g. champ, munch, shift, milk, smash, crack, drink).

Tricky Words Reviewed:
put, pull, full, push, my, by, like, some, come, love, do

New Words Introduced:

  • Champ – short for champion, someone who wins.
  • Munch – to chew something (e.g. "The horse munched on its hay.")
  • Shelf – a flat surface on the wall.
  • Shrink – to become smaller (e.g. grapes drying into raisins).
  • Plug – something that blocks a hole or connects to a power source.
  • Smash – to break into pieces.

Sentences for Reading & Writing Practice:

  • “A chimp sits on a bench to munch a carrot.”
  • “The foxes hunt at night in the dark.”
  • “I cannot swim in the pond with frogs.”
  • “Bring me the truck so I can plug it in.”

Children continue to read decodable reading books three times a week in small guided sessions to reinforce fluency and comprehension.

Home Learning Task

Look out for this week’s tricky words in books or signs while out and about. Can your child find and read them aloud to you?

Communication, Language and Literacy

Alongside our Easter writing, we read the classic story Dear Zoo and explored the concept of choosing pets. Children shared their opinions on which animal would make the best pet — with some enthusiastically suggesting crocodiles and elephants! They then wrote sentences justifying their choices, working on using full stops and capital letters.

Home Learning Task
Ask your child: If they could choose any animal to keep as a pet, what would it be and why? Encourage them to draw and write a sentence or two.

Maths

We built on our learning from last week by continuing to explore numbers beyond 10. Using rekenreks, 20 frames, and real-life objects, children practised representing, comparing, and partitioning numbers in multiple ways. This approach strengthens number sense and understanding of place value.

Home Learning Task
Use small objects at home (e.g., buttons, pasta pieces) to make numbers up to 20. Ask your child to show you how to break the number into parts (e.g., 13 = 10 + 3).

Important Information

  • Correct uniform is expected every day. Tracksuits are for Tuesdays only (PE day).
  • Please remove your child’s earrings before school to ensure their safety during active play.
