Dear Parents,

Following the news of the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, we reflected on his life this week and talked about the papal funeral. We are now encouraging the children to look forward to the forthcoming conclave, which begins on Wednesday, and pray for the Cardinal electors who have the important task of selecting our next pope.

Thank-you to everyone who signed our book of remembrance for Pope Francis. It was beautiful to read how much his pontificate meant to so many of you. The book will now be sent to the Cathedral Church at St George’s Southwark to be part of the archive there.

On Monday Class 5B attended Mass at St Mary’s and listened attentively to Father Michael as he talked about St George, whose feast was translated to Monday, as 23rd April fell in Easter this year.

NSPCC

This week every family received a letter outlining the important work from the NSPCC. Next week the children will be watching a virtual assembly which helps them to identify challenges and how to deal with them.

Swimming day

Because next week starts with a Bank Holiday, Tuesday will be a swimming day for children in Years 3 & 4. Please make sure if your child is in one of these year groups to bring his or her swimming kit on Tuesday.

Dance Trial

There is a dance trial for all the children from Years 5 and 6 who provided permission slips. This will take place after school on Tuesday (our first day back after the Bank Holiday) so children will need to remember PE kits.

Summer weather

The very warm weather in the second part of the week took many of us by surprise. Please remember the following points and make sure to talk to your children about them.

  • Every child needs to have a re-usable water bottle that can be refilled in school. We are committed to reducing plastic waste, so single use plastic bottles are discouraged. Please label your child’s reusable water bottle clearly and fill it only with water.
  • If your child finds strong sunshine difficult, make sure that he or she has a blue or black hat, clearly marked with a name.
  • Equally, consider applying sun cream before your child comes to school if the forecast is for hot weather.
  • Please spend time labelling jumpers and talk to your child about the importance of taking care of them. This week we have a huge number of jumpers and fleeces collected and sent to lost property.  We need the support of parents in this last detail because there are lots of children who are not taking responsibility for their property.

Assemblies

After a number of activities in Lent that meant changes to the calendar, we now have confirmed the dates for class assemblies and liturgies this term.

Thursday 8th May – Class 5B

Wednesday 21st May – Class 6P

Achievement Certificates

The achievement certificates this week are awarded to Gabriel in 3A, Oluchi in 3E, Rene in 4D, Asenay in 4T, Ireayomide in 5B, Joshua in 5C, Xorlali in 6G and Emmanuel in 6P. The Headteacher’s award goes to Joshua in 5C. The Kindness Award goes to Mary-Michaela in 6P. The Swimmer of the Week is Jaden in 4T.

Monday 5th May is a Bank Holiday, so we look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Tuesday 6th May.

I wish you a restful long weekend.

Yours faithfully,

A.J. McDonald

Headteacher
