Dear Parents/Carers,

Religious Education

The topics we will be focusing on during the Summer term are ‘Holidays and Holy Days’, ‘Being Sorry’, ‘Neighbours’ and ‘Hinduism’. Next week we will begin our new topic of ‘Holidays and Holy Days’. The children will explore holidays as a time to be happy.

Home learning: Talk to your child about the family holidays you have shared together and how they made them feel.

  Maths

Moving on from our introduction to counting in 2’s,5’s and 10’s, the children will be learning about equal groups and arrays. They will find out what arrays can look like, how to describe them and how to draw their own.

Home Learning:  Please continue to practise counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s with your child. Please also try to show them the multiplication facts that go with these numbers e.g. 1x2=2, 2x2=4, 3x2=6, 4x2=8, 5x2=10.

Here are some you tube songs to help you learn times table

 English

Next week we will begin to look at our first text for this half term which is the traditional tale of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. The children will be exploring the traditional version plus looking at some alternative ones over the next few weeks. They will be using adjectives to describe the characters by creating ‘Who Am I?’ questions to reveal different characters.

Home Learning: Talk to your child about traditional/fairy tales that they know. If you have some at home, please share these with your child. Discuss familiar story telling language such as ‘once upon a time’ and ‘happily ever after’.

Here is a link to the version of the story that we are using in class, for you to enjoy with your child:

   Phonics

This half term the children are recapping sounds in order to consolidate their knowledge in preparation for the phonics screening check in June. They are reading ‘alien’ words daily in their phonics sessions as part of this preparation.

Some of the children will be continuing to focus on the gaps in their phonic knowledge in order to develop their reading and writing skills appropriately.  They will be practising how to blend sounds that they know in order to read familiar and unfamiliar words.

Please ensure you are reading daily with your child at home, this is very important and can have a huge impact on the development of your child’s reading.

The reading books are matched to the children’s current phonic knowledge and this allows them to apply the sounds that they are learning to their independent reading.

Home Learning: Please look at the video below. This is a guide from Little Wandle that shows you how the children should be pronouncing the sounds they have been taught.

If you would like your child to practise reading ‘alien’ words at home, please follow this link to a video of the screening check from 2023. The children can read the words shown in the video and it models how to correctly say each sound:

Reminders

  • We have recently signed up to a new digital software called ‘Purple Mash’ and the children have had log ins for this sent home. Each Friday after school, the children will be set an activity to complete each week as part of their homework. The children will have until the following Friday morning to complete the given task on Purple Mash (please continue to ensure you are also reading daily with your child as this plays a crucial part in their reading development which in turn supports their learning across the curriculum).

Swimming and P.E. days for this half-term:

St Bernadette: P.E. on Thursdays         St Therese: Swimming on Thursdays

Many thanks from the Year 1 Team
