Year 1
13th June 2025
Dear Parents/Carers,
It has a been a very busy week in Year 1 with the Phonics Screening Check taking place and the children doing some exciting Maths learning involving cutting cakes into quarters! They have also met a new character called Professor Klunk who is sending messages to the children through a magic mustard tin in St Therese Class.
Our Celebration Assembly
Our Stars of the Week are: Gabi in St Bernadette Class and Serena in St Therese Class.
Our awards for St Mary’s Way go to: Richard in St Bernadette Class and Kaito in St Therese Class
Next week, we are coming to the end of our topic “Being Sorry”. The children will be reflecting on our learning about the importance of saying sorry and how we can show forgiveness like God does.
Home learning: Discuss forgiveness with your child and how even though sometimes we make the wrong choice, as long as we say sorry and mean it, then God will always forgive us. |
This week the children completed their learning about Fractions and have been finding out what a quarter looks like. Next week, we are learning about place value to 100. The children will be counting to 100 and talking about the larger numbers.
Home Learning: Ask your child if they can show you a quarter of something – either a shape or an amount. Remind them to share into 4 equal parts or groups. |
Now the children have met Professor Klunk, Noodle and Titch, they will be introducing them to our new class text. The text is called ‘There is No Dragon in this Story. Home Learning: Please ask your children to continue practising the Year 1 Common Exception words that were sent home at the last Parent’s Evening. It is important that children can read and spell these words as they get ready to move into Year 2 in September. Now that the screening check is complete the children will be learning new sounds that are not featured on the check but are still required to support accurate reading and writing.
Some of the children will be continuing to focus on the gaps in their phonic knowledge in order to develop their reading and writing skills appropriately. They will be practising how to blend sounds that they know in order to read familiar and unfamiliar words. Once these gaps have been filled they will move on to the Phase 5 sounds.
Please ensure you are reading daily with your child at home, this is very important and can have a huge impact on the development of your child’s reading. The reading books are matched to the children’s current phonic knowledge and this allows them to apply the sounds that they are learning to their independent reading.
Home Learning: Please look at the video below. This is a guide from Little Wandle that shows you how the children should be pronouncing the sounds they have been taught. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTe5_Em0BHQ
